
Christian Cargill is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer.
His first documentary Heart Valley, about an inspirational Welsh shepherd named Wilf, had its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival where it won the award for Best Documentary Short. It won the BAFTA Cymru Award for Short Film and was nominated for The Grierson Award for Best Documentary Short. Christian was also nominated at Camerimage and BAFTA Cymru for cinematography. After huge international press, festival screenings in ten countries and multiple more awards, it released with The New Yorker and BBC.
Recomposing Earth, his second film, had its world premiere at London’s Barbican Hall in June 2024 and tells the unique story of composer Erland Cooper‘s buried album in Orkney. It won Best Documentary at This Is England and Bolton Film Festival and is currently on its festival run.
Christian is in production with The BFI Doc Society on his third documentary WOLF (wt), an intimate and deeply personal film about musician Patrick Wolf.
Alongside his documentary work, he has directed music videos and promos with artists including Laura Marling and Palace. Branded work clients include Deliveroo, Harrods, MTV and The Wombles.
His photography spans everything from portraits to abandoned buildings and has featured in outlets including the BBC, NME, Sky Arts and The Guardian. Christian’s portrait of Sir Don McCullin was Winner of the British Journal of Photography’s prestigious Portrait of Britain Award Vol.7 and will display on digital screens across the UK throughout January 2025.
Last Orders, his ongoing photography series documenting London’s derelict pubs, will have its first exhibition in Berlin as part of British Shorts Film Festival, 24th – 29th January 2025, at Sputnik Kino.
Christian founded his production company Dalmatian Films in 2022 and joined BAFTA as a Connect Member in 2024.
